HBCU GO | 2023-24 Basketball
Graphics Package

We were excited to collaborate again with the talented team at HBCUGO, creating a graphics package that encompassed all of their sports offerings, one of the biggest being college basketball. We leaned into a dimensional, glossy, and tangible approach that built on what we’d accomplished previously while maintaining the spirit and excitement of HBCU sports.

We created an ‘HBCUGO’ arena that could house all our graphics, providing an energetic environment where all graphics can live.

The project also included an intricate in-game graphics package. We created a robust and customizable system that could live alongside the rest of the elements and emphasized delivering the information while keeping the viewer engaged in the live gameplay.

Process

Our initial concepts centered around a collegiate ‘colosseum’ decked with banners and statues to tie in the rich history of HBCU schools. To make it not all feel antiquated, giant LEDs would run throughout the structure, with everything activating and coming to life as the logo lifted epically from the ground.

Ultimately, we decided to focus on a more contemporary look, situating the logo and elements in a lively and dynamic arena.

Logo development

Part of the package included a refresh of the HBCUGO Sports logo. We carried over elements of the existing logo, such as the type and the banner, but housed it in a simplified container that would fit more seamlessly into the package elements.

We started by cleaning up, unifying letter spacing and cap heights, and streamlining the black container to feel clean and uniform across sizes. This gave us a clean base from which to explore introducing secondary information.

Regarding the logo shape and the device for housing the logomark, we thought something clean and efficient was the best across all logo uses. The banner is an ownable part of the existing logo that we didn’t want to lose, adding character and recognition, so we were sure to include it in most of our designs.

We saw the benefit of having a clean horizontal line on the score bug or lower third. It locks up cleanly and feels integrated into the system. The proposed logos make it undoubtedly ‘HBCUGO’ focused. The existing logo becomes hard to read at small sizes, with the purple letters optically blurring together. In the proposed logo, the contrast remains crisp, and HBCUGO is still a quick and easy read.
